What is itching of the tympanic membrane?

If a patient feels itching of the tympanic membrane, it is not necessarily a problem with the tympanic membrane. The surface epithelium of the eardrum is continuous with the epithelium of the external ear canal, so it is often difficult to distinguish the sensation caused by inflammation of the eardrum and the deep external ear canal, or other diseases, by itself, unless there is a hearing loss, etc. The tympanic membrane is located at the top of the deep outer ear canal. If the itching is deep in the outer ear canal, in addition to fungal otitis externa, it may also be caused by tiny foreign bodies deep in the outer ear canal, such as short hair, small bugs, etc. If these foreign bodies are moving on the surface of the tympanic membrane, in addition to deep ear itching, it will also be accompanied by symptoms such as tinnitus. In the case of fungal otitis externa, fungus is present on the surface of the tympanic membrane. In addition to ear itching, patients may also experience tinnitus and an abnormal increase in cerumen in the external ear canal.
