Traditional mood stabilizers, such as lithium and sodium valproate, are not without side effects. Low doses of lithium salts may have gastrointestinal side effects and neurological side effects, while high doses may have more serious side effects and may even cause poisoning, which may be life-threatening. Therefore, when applying lithium salt must closely observe the patient’s adverse reactions, slowly increase the dose, and to determine the blood concentration, sodium valproate may have a bad effect on liver function. At present, some clinical antipsychotic drugs with sedative effects, such as some atypical (that is, new) antipsychotic drugs to be used as mood stabilizers, commonly used are olanzapine, quetiapine, haloperidol, etc. The side effects of these drugs are significantly smaller than those of traditional mood stabilizers.
