The vast majority of children with congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis heal completely after pyloromyotomy and return to normal gastrointestinal function. Long-term follow-up studies have confirmed that the probability of recurrence after surgical treatment is very low. If the child continues to have frequent vomiting for a short period of time after surgery, this may be due to incomplete surgery, in which case the surgeon will treat conservatively for 2-3 weeks and if the symptoms do not improve, surgery may be required again.
