TIPS procedure is transjugular intrahepatic portal vein endoprosthetic shunt, which is a new interventional radiology treatment for upper gastrointestinal bleeding in portal hypertension and is used to treat the complications associated with portal hypertension.
1.TIPS procedure is a kind of procedure for the treatment of portal hypertension in liver cirrhosis, which is mainly used to treat the complications caused by portal hypertension such as ruptured esophagogastric fundal varices bleeding and intractable ascites in the clinic. However, this procedure is mainly for patients without hepatic encephalopathy, mild jaundice and low ascites.
2. This procedure is performed under contrast-guided anesthesia in the internal jugular vein, puncture, and use of catheters and guide wires to establish a “channel” between the hepatic vein and the portal vein, and at the same time, a stent is placed in the “channel” to support the establishment of a vascular bridge, so that blood in the portal vein can flow away through the vascular bridge to reduce the portal hypertension. At the same time, a stent is placed in the “channel” to support the bridge, so that the blood in the portal vein can flow away through the bridge, thus reducing the portal hypertension.
3. The most common complication after this procedure is hepatic encephalopathy. This is because after the vascular bridge is established, the blood that flows back to the liver does not undergo thorough detoxification by the liver and is supplied to the lungs and the brain, which can lead to hepatic encephalopathy due to the high level of ammonia in the blood.
After the TIPS procedure, in addition to taking medication as prescribed by the doctor, you should pay attention to diet and rest. If any mental or behavioral abnormality occurs, you must seek medical attention immediately.
