Prostate scintigraphy is a new type of nuclear medicine test similar to bone scan.
But unlike a bone scan, it is primarily used to determine whether prostate cancer has invaded organ tissue other than bone. When the prostate specific antigen (PSA) is persistently elevated after radical prostatectomy and the bone scan is not abnormal, prostate scintigraphy can be used to help identify the site of prostate cancer recurrence.
For patients with newly diagnosed prostate cancer, this new test can help more accurately help determine the stage of the cancer, and it is more sensitive and specific than CT and MRI in detecting pelvic lymph node metastases.
But it is not currently used as a routine test.
