Motherwort is useful in treating menstrual disorders, dysmenorrhea and menstrual closure, and dysmenorrhea, and has the effects of activating blood circulation and regulating menstruation, diuretic and eliminating swelling, and clearing away heat and toxins.
Motherwort is bitter, pungent and slightly cold in nature. It belongs to the liver, pericardium and bladder meridians. Clinically, it is mostly used for edema and urination, sores, swelling and poison and other diseases.
Motherwort is used in the treatment of blood stagnation, dysmenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain with stagnation, and postpartum menstrual discharge, and can be used alone; if blood stasis is accompanied by qi stagnation, it can be used with Angelica sinensis, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, and Muxiang, which are known to invigorate blood circulation and promote the flow of qi; if blood stasis is accompanied by qi and blood deficiencies, it can be used with Ba Zhen Tang.
Motherwort has the effect of clearing heat and removing toxins, activating blood circulation, reducing swelling and relieving pain, and can be used together with Chuanxiong and Angelica to treat bruises and stasis; it can be used alone for external cleansing or applying externally, or together with dandelion, cypress, and bitter ginseng to remove heat and toxins and dampness to treat carbuncle and swollen toxins, and skin rashes of addictions.
