Which temperature is accurate: oral or underarm

Different methods of measuring body temperature, the value of the response temperature also varies slightly, generally there are three parts of the thermometer placed, oral, axillary, rectal. The temperature measured under the tongue in the mouth is called oral temperature, which is a simple measurement method, but it is not accurate enough for patients with inflammatory oral lesions, open-mouth breathing, irritability, weakness, or those who have eaten hot food or drank hot drinks before temperature measurement. In addition, for patients who are unconscious or convulsing, it may be dangerous to bite off the thermometer. The temperature measured by placing the thermometer in the armpit is called axillary temperature, which is a simple method and is not affected by drinking, eating, open-mouth breathing, or uncooperative, but can be affected by factors such as sweating and ambient temperature, making the measured temperature may be less accurate, and the axillary temperature may be low if in a cold environment. Therefore, if necessary, the body temperature should be measured by the anus, also known as anal temperature, this method is more accurate and reliable, and generally the temperature measured by the anus is slightly higher than the oral temperature, while the temperature of the axilla is slightly lower than the oral temperature. The length of time the thermometer is placed when measuring the temperature also has a certain relationship, the time is too short the measured temperature value may be low, generally must be measured for more than five minutes.
