Recovery time for patella fracture

In the absence of complications such as delayed fracture healing and bone nonunion, the overall recovery time for patella fracture is around 3 months, during which time an appropriate rehabilitation program is required. Conservative patients are immobilized in a cast or brace in the early stages, with functional exercises in the later stages. Surgical patients can receive gradual rehabilitation during the perioperative period to speed up the recovery.

1. Conservative treatment: the knee joint needs to be immobilized in a functional position, i.e., the knee joint is immobilized in a plaster cast or brace at 15° of knee flexion, and the tightness and looseness of the immobilization are adjusted appropriately at a later stage as the swelling subsides. If the fracture is well healed in 4-6 weeks, the external immobilization can be removed, and then the knee flexion and extension can be practiced in the bed and then gradually transitioned to the ground to walk on crutches with a heavy load for three months or so, so that the knee can be walked normally.

2. Surgical treatment: surgery is elective surgery, the first day after the operation, the ankle joint function exercise, 1 week later began to straight raise the leg and the side of the leg lifting exercises, 2 weeks to remove the incision sutures, and then according to the strength of the internal fixation of the appropriate knee training. Generally it is also about three months after the fracture is completely healed, you can walk normally.

After the patella fracture, you should go to the hospital in time, follow the doctor’s advice to choose the appropriate treatment and rehabilitation exercise program to promote the recovery of the fracture, do not blindly deal with your own, so as not to delay the condition.
