The main impact of the Treatise on Miscellaneous Diseases of Typhoid Fever is that it established the TCM principle of diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, and left more than a hundred classic and effective prescriptions for future generations. The Treatise on Miscellaneous Diseases of Typhoid Fever was written by the great medical doctor Zhang Ji (Zhongjing),which mainly deals with the treatment of exogenous fever, and categorizes exogenous fever into six types, namely, solar, yang-ming, shao-yang, tai-yin, shaoyin and syncopal diseases, which serves as a platform of diagnosis and treatment; and uses the eight principles, namely, yin and yang, exterior and interior, cold and heat, and emptiness and solidity, to identify the parts, attributes, the growth of evils and the manifestations of illnesses. It has been guiding the clinical practice of later generations of physicians. In addition to introducing the characteristics of each meridian and the corresponding treatments, “Treatise on Miscellaneous Diseases of Typhoid” also describes the transmission of each meridian, the combination of diseases, the concurrence of diseases, as well as the change of evidence caused by improper treatment, bad evidence and its remedies, etc., which really achieves the organic combination of principle and flexibility in the process of diagnosis and treatment. The Treatise on Typhoid Miscellaneous Diseases also made a very important contribution to the development of prescription science, with more than a hundred classical prescriptions, and proposed that treatment should be based on a holistic concept, adjusting the yin and yang, supporting the positive and repelling the evil, as well as the methods of sweating, vomiting, lowering, and warming, clearing, eliminating, and tonifying.
