Chen Pi Functions and Effects

The efficacy (function) of tangerine peel is to strengthen the spleen and regulate qi (promote the normal function of the spleen, so that qi can operate normally), resolve dampness and dispel phlegm (promote the metabolism of body fluid, dispel phlegm, water and dampness); its function is to treat diseases caused by the deficiency of the spleen and the prevalence of dampness. Chenpi is the dried and matured pericarp of orange and its cultivated varieties in the family of Rutaceae. It is warm in nature, pungent and bitter in flavor, and belongs to the lung and spleen meridians. The main effect of Chen Pi is to strengthen the spleen and regulate qi, resolve dampness and dispel phlegm. In clinical practice, it is mainly used in the treatment of chest and epigastric distension and discomfort, poor diet, cough and phlegm, vomiting and diarrhea. Adverse effects of Chen Pi have not been documented, but avoid eating cold, sticky and phlegm-producing food during the medication. Chen Pi should not be used in patients with Qi deficiency, Yin deficiency and solid heat in the body.
