Bacterial vaginitis is generally characterized by increased discharge, a distinct odor, and a clear diagnosis when clue cells are seen on examination of the discharge.
Trichomonas vaginitis can be clearly diagnosed by seeing trichomonas in the secretion test and can be treated with topical metronidazole suppositories combined with oral metronidazole tablets. Patients with trichomoniasis need to be treated with oral metronidazole tablets to prevent cross-infection.
Pelvic inflammatory disease may be a mixed bacterial infection, which usually needs to be treated with a combination of antibiotics, such as with azithromycin combined with metronidazole.
