Can adults get herpes pharyngitis?

Herpes pharyngitis is a relatively common disease caused by coxsackie group A virus or enterovirus, and although most commonly seen in children, it can also develop in adolescents and adults. The symptoms of herpes pharyngitis in adults are similar to those of children, with an incubation period of 2-4 days, marked sore throat, aggravated by swallowing, and fever, mainly low or moderate, up to 40°C in severe cases. In addition, the patient may have headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and myalgia. On examination, a congested pharynx, grayish-white herpes on the soft palate, uvula, pharynx and tonsils, and superficial ulcers surrounded by a red halo are seen. The duration of the disease is usually 4-5 days, but in some patients it can extend to about 2 weeks. The white blood cell count and classification are mostly normal, but the neutrophil percentage may be elevated and the C-reactive protein may be significantly increased in cases of combined bacterial infection. Because herpes pharyngitis is highly contagious, if diagnosed, patients need to be isolated to avoid cross-infection. In addition, there are no specific drugs for coxsackie group A viruses or enteroviruses, and treatment is mainly symptomatic, with antiviral drugs such as ribavirin, ganciclovir, and acyclovir. Patients with combined bacterial infections can be treated with a combination of antibiotics and Chinese medicines to clear fever and detoxify the toxins, such as Lianhua Qingfei and Blue Scutellaria Oral Liquid. Patients with fever can be given antipyretic drugs. Usually, patients with mild cases recover in 1-2 weeks, but a small number of patients can develop complications, such as myocarditis, so once there is a change in condition or worsening of symptoms, they should seek medical attention promptly. In life patients should pay attention to maintain oral hygiene, oral ulcers can be gargled with light salt water, oral supplement vitamins, application of ice borax, nebulizer, etc. to reduce the symptoms of sore throat. During the illness, patients should pay attention to rest, drink more water, eat more fresh vegetables and fruits and easily digestible food, and eat less spicy food to avoid aggravation of symptoms.
