First expert consensus on retroperitoneal tumors in Asia published

The first expert consensus on retroperitoneal tumors in Asia was published recently, and the first expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of primary retroperitoneal soft tissue tumors at Peking University Cancer Hospital (2015), which was written by Peking University Cancer Hospital, was officially authorized by the Chinese Journal of Practical Surgery for global publication. Retroperitoneal tumors are difficult to be diagnosed at an early stage due to their low incidence and insidious clinical manifestations. When symptoms appear, the tumors are often extremely large and compress important abdominal organs such as duodenum, liver, spleen, kidney, pancreas or large blood vessels, which makes surgical resection extremely difficult, with high surgical risks and high economic costs, and is one of the difficulties in the field of tumor treatment. For a long time, due to the lack of unified diagnosis and treatment guidelines for retroperitoneal tumors, it is not uncommon for doctors of various disciplines to work on their own. For such rare diseases, inappropriate diagnosis and treatment often bring about problems such as high recurrence rate after surgery, resulting in poor tumor outcome, which brings a heavy burden to patients’ families and society. The overall treatment level of retroperitoneal tumor in China has a certain gap with the specialized oncology centers in Europe and America, and the survival rate of patients is lower than the international advanced level. Li Chengpeng, Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Peking University Cancer Hospital Since its official establishment in June 2015, the multidisciplinary collaboration (MDT) team of retroperitoneal tumor led by Professor Hao Chunyi, a famous oncologic surgeon in China, has relied on the disciplinary advantages of domestic first-class specialized oncology hospitals, organically combined various treatment means such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and tailored to The MDT team has successfully provided consultation and treatment services for hundreds of patients with retroperitoneal tumors, relying on the strengths of top tumor specialties in China. The expert consensus launched by the center has gathered the efforts of many top experts in the field of diagnosis and treatment of retroperitoneal tumor in China, based on the past clinical work, implementing the concept of evidence-based medicine, extensively drawing on the latest international diagnosis and treatment experience, and combining with the actual national conditions of China, and finally finalized after more than ten discussions and revisions by multiple experts. It is reported that before the publication of this consensus, only one similar expert consensus has been published in Europe and America. The consensus of Peking University Cancer Hospital on retroperitoneal tumor not only fills the gap in China, but also is the first official guideline document on the diagnosis and treatment of retroperitoneal tumor in Asia, which will certainly help to improve the diagnosis and treatment of retroperitoneal tumor in China, standardize the diagnosis and treatment of such tumor, and ultimately benefit patients with retroperitoneal tumor in China.
