The luteinizing hormone to follicle stimulating hormone ratio should be less than 2 under normal clinical conditions. If it is greater than 2, polycystic ovary syndrome is highly suspected. Further ultrasound examination can be done to find out whether there are polycystic ovarian changes in both ovaries and to monitor whether ovulation is occurring. Polycystic ovary syndrome is indicated if the following 3 symptoms are present: 1) more than 12 follicles in both ovaries; 2) no ovulation or sporadic ovulation; 3) increased androgens. The presence of any two abnormalities is diagnostic of polycystic ovary syndrome. Clinically, the ratio of luteinizing hormone to follicle stimulating hormone will indicate the presence of polycystic ovary syndrome.
