If the top of the eye feels painful on pressure and may be red and swollen, it is likely that a bacterial infection has caused inflammation of the lid gland, which is often referred to clinically as mydriasis. It is usually caused by improper eye use, poor diet, or decreased body resistance, and most often requires anti-infective and anti-inflammatory medications, such as tobramycin dexamethasone drops, for appropriate topical treatment. In addition, one application of tobramycin eye ointment or gatifloxacin eye ointment can be used at night before bedtime for nighttime antibiotic coverage. If the pain is more intense and the redness is more pronounced, oral antibiotic treatment, such as amoxicillin, can also be administered to significantly reduce pain and redness.
