“Whether or not you are infected with hepatitis B can be kept from others, but you must let yourself know.” The purpose of China’s elimination of the Hepatitis B medical examination program for school enrollment and employment is to protect the public’s right to equal education and employment, but it does not mean that individuals can neglect testing for Hepatitis B programs, as such neglect may affect the early diagnosis and treatment of Hepatitis B. In February 2010, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health jointly issued the Circular on Further Standardizing the Physical Examination Items for Entry into Schools and Employment to Safeguard the Rights of People Carrying Hepatitis B Surface Antigen to Enter Schools and Be Employed, which called for the elimination of testing for Hepatitis B in physical examinations for entry into schools and employment. Wang Yu, director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pointed out that from a medical point of view, hepatitis B testing is necessary in order to achieve prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis B, control the transformation of the disease, and reduce the occurrence of cirrhosis, liver cancer and other malignant diseases. Experts emphasize that there is no restriction on checking hepatitis B infection markers if there is a medical need or routine personal health checkup. Prof. Jia Jidong, chairman of the Chinese Medical Association’s Division of Liver Diseases, said that from the perspective of protecting the uninfected themselves, the government encourages individuals to learn about their own infection status through medical checkups and tests, especially the spouses, sexual partners, and family members of hepatitis B virus-infected individuals, who should take the initiative to undergo tests for serum hepatitis B surface antigen, core antibody, and hepatitis B surface antibody.
