Newborns are usually given milk first and water is not recommended. Milk already contains a large amount of water, and there is no need for additional water during the newborn period as long as milk feeding is adequate. Shortly after birth, it is recommended that newborns start breastfeeding as early as possible and suckle as early as possible to promote good secretion of breastmilk to achieve the amount needed to meet the needs of infants. If breastmilk secretion is insufficient, formula feeding can be added. If the newborn baby drinks water first, the water occupies the capacity of the baby’s stomach, thus reducing the amount of milk the baby drinks, which may lead to malnutrition in the long run. Moreover, milk contains a lot of nutrients that can promote the growth and development of newborns, which is much better than simply feeding water. If your newborn has discomfort such as feeding difficulties, it is advisable to seek prompt medical attention.
