Heishun tablets generally refer to epiphyllum. Epiphyllum is highly toxic and may cause side effects such as generalized numbness, breathing difficulties, dilated pupils, pallor, heart rhythm disturbances, and possibly even sudden death. This product is toxic and caution should be exercised when taken internally. Epiphyllum is pungent and sweet in flavor, greatly hot and toxic in nature, and is attributed to the heart, kidney and spleen meridians. It has the effects of returning yang to save the body (saving fainting, unconsciousness, etc. by warming yang qi), tonifying fire to help yang (replenishing the body’s yang qi), dispersing cold and relieving pain (relieving pain by dispelling the body’s cold evil). This product can be used for treating deficiency of dead yang, cold pulse and limbs, deficiency of heart yang, chest paralysis (stuffy pain in the chest), heart pain, vomiting and diarrhea with deficiency of cold, cold pain in the epigastric region (feeling cold pain in the stomach and abdomen), deficiency of kidney yang (deficiency of yang qi in kidneys), impotence with coldness in the uterus, coldness of yin with oedema, external sensation of deficiency of yang and cold-dampness with paralysis and pain, and so on. This product has strong toxicity, and when taken improperly or in too large a dose, it may cause a toxic reaction, with side effects such as generalized numbness, trembling of the limbs, burning of the mouth, salivation (drooling), nausea, vomiting, dyspnea, pupil dilatation, pallor, cardiac rhythm disturbances, and may even lead to sudden death. It should be noted that alcohol should be avoided when taking this product, and it should not be taken with herbs such as Gua Piper, Bei Mu, Semen, Ampelopsis, Bai He. Pregnant women should use it with caution.
