Precautions after tonsillar adenoid surgery

1.Post-operative supine head must be tilted to one side, or side lying, to avoid oral secretions accidentally into the trachea; observe whether the child has shortness of breath, wheezing, blue lips, if it happens, promptly ask for help from the staff.

2, closely observe the bleeding situation of the child: after surgery when less talk, the environment should be quiet and tidy, after waking up, ask the child to take a comfortable position to rest, avoid coughing, gently spit out oral secretions, do not swallow; observe the color and amount of spit out. Pay attention to whether the child has frequent swallowing movements during sleep and whether there is bleeding in the nasal cavity, and if it happens, seek help from the staff in time.

3. As younger children and some more delicate children are not cooperative and cry more, parents should not be overly nervous, as parents’ nervousness will affect the child, making the child more nervous and restless, intensifying the crying and quarreling, thus aggravating the bleeding. Parents should comfort and encourage the child, explain the importance of cooperation, relax and lie still, avoid crying and quarreling.

4. Observe the vomiting situation: the child’s head should be tilted to the side when vomiting to avoid accidental aspiration. To strengthen the observation of the color, quality and quantity of vomit, if the vomit is coffee-colored, it means that there may be a small amount of intraoperative bleeding swallowed by the child, there is no active bleeding, there is no need to be nervous; if the vomit is bright red blood or blood clots, it means that there may be active bleeding, we should pay attention to it and strengthen the observation, we should get in touch with the medical staff in time to draw attention to it, strengthen the observation and take corresponding measures.

5. Fasting and drinking within 6h after surgery, and a small amount of cold liquid food after 6h, because cold liquid food can make vasoconstriction, prevent wound bleeding, and relieve pain in the throat. Do not eat hard, large, sour, spicy and other irritating food for 2 weeks to avoid bruising the incisional white membrane and causing bleeding. Avoid eating bananas and mangoes after surgery.

6, keep the mouth clean, use mouthwash to clean the mouth to prevent infection, maintain the healthy growth of the white membrane, help the wound heal as soon as possible. For young children who cannot cooperate, parents can be instructed to give light saline or cold water after the child eats.

7.Observation of the child’s sleep snoring, postoperative snoring is caused by the edema of the tissue around the wound after surgery, which can gradually improve in one or two weeks after surgery.

8.The next day after surgery, the patient can get out of bed and be encouraged to do mouth opening and tongue stretching exercises. And can speak softly. To promote local blood circulation, facilitate incision healing, and prevent wound adhesions and scar contracture.

9. Due to the change of the structure of the speech after surgery, the resonant cavity becomes wider, so it leads to the change of speech, there is no need to worry too much, it will be corrected by itself.
