Can an amniocentesis detect eye problems?

Amniocentesis does not detect all eye problems, but it can detect eye problems caused by chromosomal abnormalities.
Amniocentesis is one of the most important prenatal chromosome screening tests. Amniocentesis tests the chromosomes of the fetus by extracting a specimen of amniotic fluid from the pregnant woman to obtain fetal exfoliated cells.
Amniocentesis can be used for the evaluation of intrauterine conditions and the diagnosis of fetal diseases, such as for the diagnosis of fetal chromosomal disorders and monogenic diseases, etc. However, amniocentesis cannot detect fetal eye problems. Only eye diseases caused by chromosomal abnormalities such as retinopathy can be detected.
Screening for fetal eye diseases is usually done 24 hours after birth and focuses on retinopathy, congenital glaucoma, congenital cataract and other eye diseases.
