Conservative treatment of meniscus tears is generally not very effective. Because the meniscus is located between the femur and tibia, it is located in the joint cavity and serves to reduce shock and absorb pressure. When the meniscus is torn, when the joint moves, the tibia and femur will squeeze the torn meniscus, stimulating the nerves around the meniscus and causing pain. Conservative treatment of the meniscus will not usually relieve the pain caused by the torn meniscus, but will often make the torn meniscus worse and the pain more severe. Therefore, surgical treatment is generally advocated for meniscal tears. Depending on the patient’s age and arthroscopic exploration of the meniscal tear, meniscal suturing or meniscal trimming, partial excision or complete excision can be performed, which generally leads to better results. Therefore, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery is generally recommended for meniscal tears, and conservative treatment is not recommended.
