  What causes cerebral palsy 1. Various abnormalities during the mother’s pregnancy may be risk factors for cerebral palsy, such as fetal brain malformations and multiple pregnancies. The incidence of cerebral palsy is more than 6 times higher in twin births than in single births.  2. Birth injuries at birth, neonatal intracranial hemorrhage, and neonatal asphyxia are common causes of cerebral palsy.  3. Prematurity and low birth weight are important causes of cerebral palsy.  4. Severe neonatal jaundice, which causes bilirubin encephalopathy, can also cause cerebral palsy; fetal and neonatal central nervous system infections can cause different degrees of brain damage, resulting in mental retardation or cerebral palsy, etc.  5. Some genetic metabolic diseases can also manifest as cerebral palsy.  There are also about 1/4 of children with cerebral palsy for which no cause can be found at present.
