The staging of diabetic retinopathy is divided into non-proliferative and proliferative stages according to the fundus changes, which can be divided into six stages. The details are as follows: 1. Stage I is the formation of microaneurysms and some small hemorrhages in the retina; 2. Stage II changes are yellowish-white hard exudate or a small amount of hemorrhagic spots in the retina; 3. Stage III changes are white soft exudate or a small amount of hemorrhagic spots in the retina, and stages I-III are called the non-proliferative stage of diabetic retinopathy; 4. Stage IV of the proliferative stage has retinal neovascularization or vitreous hemorrhage; 5. When retinal neovascularization hemorrhage is followed by formation of fiber proliferation, diabetic retinopathy stage V is reached; 6. Proliferative retinal detachment secondary to proliferative traction is the stage VI change of diabetic retinopathy.
