Does it matter if there is a plus sign in the urine occult blood?

Urinalysis, which includes the urine ten tests, usually includes urine occult blood analysis, and the results are shown as: negative, +, ++, +++, ++++. Does it matter if the result has a plus sign or not? This should be analyzed specifically. Urine occult blood with a plus sign and hematuria are not exactly the same thing. Urine occult blood test is a chemical reaction result detected by test strips or automatic analyzer. Positive results are indicated by different plus signs depending on the degree of the chemical reaction, suggesting the possible presence of hemoglobin, myoglobin and red blood cells in the urine. Urine that has been left too long before testing, alkaline urine or the presence of hemoglobin and myoglobin can show positive urine occult blood and does not indicate the presence of a serious disorder. Hematuria, on the other hand, refers to a higher than normal number of red blood cells in the urine and is usually observed by centrifuging the urine and placing the sediment under a microscope. The result is labeled as the number of red blood cells. If the number of red blood cells exceeds the normal range and the color of the urine is normal to the naked eye, it is called microscopic hematuria; if the urine is red to the naked eye, it is called sarcoid hematuria. If the urine is pink or washed with water, but does not contain blood clots, it indicates that there is not much blood loss and there is no need to worry too much. However, either microscopic hematuria or carnal hematuria suggests the presence of organic disease and requires active investigation. Therefore, the presence of a plus urine occult blood usually requires further evaluation, especially to determine the presence of hematuria.
