Guidelines for sugar reduction and prevention and control for diabetics during the epidemic

As of 14:00 on February 7, the cumulative number of confirmed novel coronavirus infections nationwide has exceeded 30,000. Patients infected by the virus are mainly concentrated in the 40-60 age group, many of whom also suffer from diabetes, hypertension, obesity and other underlying diseases. According to data from a paper published in the world’s top medical journal The Lancet on January 29, 41 patients diagnosed with novel coronavirus infection as of January 2, 2020, 32% of whom had chronic diseases such as combined diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease, and 46% of whom died. The proportion of diabetic patients in particular is as high as 20%, and diabetic patients are most likely to be susceptible to new coronavirus infections. Why do viruses always find diabetic patients? This is because the blood sugar of diabetic patients is always at a high level, which naturally leads to a lowered immune defense function of the body, and once the immunity is low it will be no match for the menace of the virus. Therefore, in this epidemic, it is more important for diabetic patients to take precautions to protect themselves. For diabetics, the virus is the external cause and high blood sugar is the internal cause, and it is the combination of internal and external factors that will lead to the eventual infection. So to really avoid infection, we need to think about both aspects. For external causes, we should avoid going out to reduce the chance of being infected by the virus. Avoid crowd gathering places, keep indoor air circulation, and wear masks properly when going out; when coughing, sneezing or running nose, cover it with paper or handkerchief, and throw the pollutants into the garbage in time to avoid the risk of spreading the virus twice. Keep a distance of more than 1.5 meters when you are in contact with people or talking to them. In addition, we should wash our hands regularly, not to touch our eyes, nose and other parts with mucous membranes, and wash our hands properly, preferably with hand sanitizer or soap with antibacterial ingredients. Internally, we should take medication on time as prescribed by the doctor, and monitor the changes of blood sugar consciously, and report any abnormal fluctuation of blood sugar to our primary care doctor in time. During this special period, we should try not to go to the hospital, especially not to the fever clinic, to avoid causing hospital infection. Of course, we should also have a reasonable diet, balanced nutrition, no wild game and live poultry, and try to eat a light diet with less carbohydrates. At the same time, we should limit fat intake and choose high-quality protein, such as fish, shrimp, beef, etc. Develop good work and rest habits and ensure sufficient sleep. You can do some simple exercises at home to strengthen your resistance. Don’t panic during this special period, don’t believe in rumors, don’t spread rumors, let’s cheer for Wuhan, cheer for China, hope that our medical staff can eliminate the epidemic as soon as possible and each of us can take off our masks and step out for fresh air.
