HFMD is an acute infectious disease caused by an enterovirus that mostly affects children between the ages of six months and five years. The rash can appear first in the mouth, then on the hands, feet, buttocks, perianal area, and inner thighs, and can be completed within a day. The rash is mainly green bean or rice-grain in size and may be surrounded by erythema. The rash resolves on its own in about 2-4 days and does not require special treatment. There is no hyperpigmentation or scarring after the herpes resolves, unless the child scratches and causes a local bacterial infection. HFMD is a self-limiting disease that recovers on its own within a week or so, and only 5% of children may progress to severe HFMD.
