Zhang Zhongjing, a famous medical scientist in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, is revered as the Saint of Medicine. 1800 years ago, he wrote the most influential work in the history of Chinese medicine, “Treatise on Typhoid and Miscellaneous Diseases”. Since the Tang Dynasty and up to the present day, this book has been required reading for the study of Chinese medicine, and has even had a profound influence on medicine in Korea and Japan. In this book, there is a formula called “Gui Zhi Tang”, which is called “the first formula of typhoid fever” and “the top of the group of prescriptions”, and underneath it, there is a detailed description of how to take the medicine and what to pay attention to after taking the medicine. It is important to guide us to take care of the fever of external wind-cold. The book is written as follows: “serve has been a short time, sip hot thin porridge more than a liter to help the power of the medicine, warm over so that a moment, stinging all over the body slightly seems to have sweat is good, not to make such as water flowing Li, the disease will not be removed, if a service sweat out of the disease is poor, stop after serving, do not have to finish the dose, if not sweat, and more to serve according to the previous method, and not sweat, after serving a small promotion between them, half a day or so, the three services are finished today, if the disease is serious, a day and a night to serve. Sleepy time to observe, serve a dose of the end, the disease is still in the person, more to serve if the sweat is different, is served to two or three doses, forbidden raw and cold, sticky and slippery, meat and noodles, five spices, wine and cheese, stinky and other things.” 1, “serve has been a short time, sip hot thin porridge more than a liter to help the medicine power.” This sentence is about how to achieve the effect of sweating. Shu Shu refers to soon; sipping (chuò ) means drinking, eating. In other words, after taking Gui Zhi Tang, in order to promote the sweating effect, one can drink hot thin porridge. This tells us that when the sweating effect is not good after taking medicine for external wind-cold fever, we can use the method of drinking hot thin porridge; conversely, it also reminds us that when taking medicine for external wind-cold fever, it is not advisable to eat raw and cold food, or cold boiled water to deliver medicine. In “Zhu Jinzhong old Chinese medicine experience” recorded such a case: my brother Zhu Fengguang, treating a patient. He had a sudden onset of headache and body pain, with fever and chills. Checked his body temperature 38.8 degrees Celsius. Cloud: This is also a wind-cold cold. I gave aspirin and caffeine. Three times a day, one packet at a time. After two days, no effect. Asked, cloud: because there is no hot water, generally use cold water to take. I said: also wrong. This yin-cold evidence, non-warm Yang medicine is not effective, cold water is also Yin, boiling water is also Yang, should be changed to medicine after taking hot boiling water two large bowls, and covered with sweat. After taking the medicine will be cured. The same drug, the effect is very different between the cold water delivery and hot water delivery. “warm cover to make a moment or so, all over the body stinging slightly seems to have sweat is good, not make as water flowing Li, the disease will not be removed”. This sentence is just 28 words, but it has very important clinical guidance, telling us what degree of sweating we need to achieve. 2, “stinging all over the body slightly seems to have sweat is good, do not make like water dripping, the disease will not be removed. This sentence explains the effect of sweating: sweating all over the body, including the hands and feet; but only a slight sweat, not a profuse sweat. Chinese medicine believes that “sweat is also essence”, “sweat is a thing, but the two aspects of yin and Yang”, sweating too much, will damage the body’s positive energy, affecting the body’s own ability to resist disease. 3, “forbidden cold, sticky, meat and noodles, five spices, wine and cheese, stinky and other things.” This sentence is the diet attention. After the disease should avoid eating raw and cold, fatty and sweet, greasy, fried, spicy and fermented food. The correct diet is, firstly, to avoid damaging the body’s stomach qi and to avoid burdening the spleen and stomach; secondly, to avoid helping dampness and heat and producing new pathological changes. The general principles are: the diet should be light and calm, neither too cold nor too hot; avoid being too hungry and too full; refer to personal eating habits and avoid trying or even eating a lot of food that has not been eaten before during illness.
