As the faecal flora is mainly anaerobic, i.e. cannot survive in an oxygenated environment, and to a lesser extent aerobic, i.e. must survive in an oxygenated environment, leaving the wound open after surgery not only facilitates drainage, but also reduces the risk of infection more effectively than the dressing-covered approach.
