What to do if your toddler has a slurred speech

In young children with slurred speech, it is generally recommended that the child’s speech be examined by a pediatrician. If the pediatrician believes that the patient has no intellectual problems, the patient should be seen in the dentistry department. For dentistry, there are two main diseases that cause slurred speech in young children, one is congenital cleft palate and the other is congenital short tongue tie. Both diseases may cause slurred speech. For cleft palate, it is often combined with cleft lip, and surgery is recommended at the age of 1-1/2 years. Another clinical condition is called short lingual tethering, which is commonly referred to as short lingual tendons. The latest philosophy is to recommend observation until after the age of 3 years, because the child itself is not fully developed in the speech center until about 3-4 years of age. If the tongue tie is not particularly short, it is recommended to consider lengthening the tongue tie after the age of 3 years if speech is still unclear.
