CA72-4 is one of the commonly used tumor markers for physical examinations and is mainly used for screening of GI tumors. Therefore, if CA72-4 is elevated, it is indeed possible that it is caused by GI tumors or other tumors. If only the single CA72-4 indicator is high, there are many other reasons to be considered. Because the CA72-4 index is relatively disturbed by the most factors, many other causes can also cause a transient increase in CA72-4, resulting in a false positive test. Benign diseases, including inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, chronic gastritis or colitis, can cause an increase in this indicator. Medications may affect this indicator, the most common ones being ibuprofen, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs, and anti-gout drugs, such as colchicine, which can sometimes cause a significant increase in this indicator. Some patients may also have a slightly higher level of protein secreted by their own normal cells, which is known as a high basal value. In conclusion, CA72-4 is only a tumor marker for general examination. If it is not accompanied by other indicators that are high, but only this indicator is slightly higher, it is recommended to review it dynamically and check it again after a while, so don’t be too nervous.
