How to treat inflammation of the nail groove of the hand

Nail infections are treated differently depending on the degree of inflammation. If there is only redness and pain around the nail bed, the cause of the infection can be found in the form of an ingrown nail or trauma to the skin on the fingertips of the hand. This should be corrected by cutting the ingrown nail or bandaging the hand, applying anti-inflammatory ointment, and soaking the hand in warm water every day, adding hydrogen peroxide to the warm water to help reduce the pain. Anti-inflammatory ointments such as Pepto Bismal or Polymyxin B are commonly used. If the nail infection becomes purulent, an incision and drainage is required. If the nail infection causes a large amount of pus to accumulate under the nail bed, i.e. under the nail cap, the nail should be removed and the abscess should be drained.
