Below the scapula and above the chest is the clavicle, an elongated, S-shaped bone that connects the scapula to the sternum, anteriorly above the thorax. The sternal clavicle is attached medially to the sternal styloid and is associated with the locking notch of the sternal styloid, and is slightly flattened laterally in a position known as the acromion end, which is articulated with the acromion of the scapula. The clavicle is also an important anatomical site on the body surface for puncture, and is used as a marker for performing subclavian venipuncture, which is used for pacemaker placement, as well as for central venous pressure measurements, and for performing rapid rehydration supportive therapy, among other roles.
