What is Turf Toe?

  Turf toe: Commonly seen in sports injuries, such as rugby, soccer and other competitive sports on turf, hence the name turf toe.  It is an injury to the joint capsule ligament complex (a series of related ligaments, tendons, joint capsule, metatarsal plate, seed bone, and metatarsal bone) caused by excessive dorsiflexion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint.  Grade II injury: It is a partial rupture of the plantar joint capsule ligament complex of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, and it takes about 3 weeks to recover with brace and cast immobilization.  Grade III injury: It is a complete rupture of the plantar joint capsule ligament complex of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, which takes about 10 weeks to recover from treatment, and some of them require surgery.
