Honey has anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and edema-reducing properties. For small wounds, honey can be applied to reduce inflammation and swelling. If the wound is infected and the patient has edema of the face and lower extremities, honey will not help and the patient should be examined in the hospital. For further investigation, check urine routine, renal function, renal ultrasound to detect nephrogenic edema, thyroid function to detect mucinous edema caused by hypothyroidism, cardiac ultrasound and BNP to detect cardiogenic edema in elderly patients, and unexplained edema called idiopathic edema, which has no special treatment and can be given diuretic and decongestant to improve symptoms. Patients with hypertension taking oral antihypertensive drugs, such as amlodipine, nifedipine and other calcium antagonist antihypertensive drugs, can cause lower limb edema, which can disappear after discontinuing and adjusting the type of antihypertensive class. Therefore, if a patient has edema, he or she should go to the hospital to identify the cause for appropriate treatment.
