How to treat high eye pressure

Currently there are three main types of treatment for high intraocular pressure: one, medication; two, laser; and three, surgery. But high IOP needs to be treated according to what causes it, and then different treatment options are taken. A common cause of high IOP is caused by primary glaucoma, but it can also be traumatic, inflammatory or other causes. High eye pressure requires a treatment plan based on the specific type of disease. A detailed eye exam is needed to determine which cause of high eye pressure is responsible, and then medication, laser or surgery is used. There are many medications available to lower IOP, including topical eye drops, oral antihypertensive medications and systemic medications. There are also a variety of lasers, such as the YAG laser for acute closed-angle glaucoma in remission, and an iridoplasty laser for increased IOP. There are also various surgical procedures, such as trabeculectomy, cataract surgery to reduce IOP, and implantation of drainage staples or valves to reduce IOP, which require a comprehensive evaluation to determine the pressure-lowering treatment plan.
