What is the pain in the chest when you breathe in?

There may be many reasons for pain in the chest when breathing during inspiration, and internal diseases must be ruled out, such as whether there is pneumonia or pleurisy, which requires a chest X-ray, lung auscultation, listening to the patient’s pleural friction sounds, and doing palpation to check whether there is pleural friction. If all of the above tests are not abnormal, but there is still pain on inspiration, consider whether there is intercostal muscle injury, intercostal nerve irritation, such as the commonly known intercostal neuralgia condition. Other neuralgia screening is also needed, such as spinal cord-derived pain, where the nerve roots are still stretched during inspiration, causing pain that should also be considered. Sometimes sedentary office workers may have disorders of the thoracic spine, which may stimulate the thoracic nerve roots and cause intercostal pain to occur during inspiration.
