Patients with hypertension can take vitamin C and vitamin B6. Vitamin C given in doses of 250-500 mg twice daily can bring down blood pressure. Particularly in patients with low plasma ascorbic acid levels, vitamin C improves endothelial dysfunction, is a potent antioxidant, and reduces systemic vascular resistance, lowering blood pressure by an average of 7/4 mm Hg. The higher the initial blood pressure and the lower the plasma ascorbic acid level, the better the effect. Daily supplementation with vitamin B6 at a dose of 5 mg/kg can reduce blood pressure by 14/10 mmHg in 4 weeks. vitamin B6 acts similarly to central α2 agonists, calcium antagonists, and diuretics, and vitamin B6 also improves insulin sensitivity and carbohydrate metabolism, which can lead to an improvement in blood pressure. However, the daily intake should not exceed 200mg to avoid neuropathy.
