Zinc oxide is a skin protectant that has protective, drying, astringent and physical shading properties. Zinc oxide formulated for topical application can be made into lotions, powders, pastes, ointments and oils. The concentration of lotions and ointments is generally 15%; the concentration of pastes is 25%-50%; and the concentration of oils is 40%. Zinc oxide lotions are generally applied externally several times a day in appropriate amounts; pastes and ointments, generally need to be applied twice a day. The powder is usually puffed on the affected area and applied several times a day. Zinc oxide is used as a topical agent for dermatitis, acute eczema with exudation or subacute eczema, and sweat rash. Zinc oxide also has a sunscreen effect.
