There is no scientific basis for the claim that the later the fontanel closes, the smarter the child is. There is no obvious relationship between the time a child’s fontanel closes and his or her intelligence, which is mostly determined by genes and learning. The closure of the fontanel is only related to the growth and development of the child. The fontanel includes anterior and posterior fontanelles, usually the posterior fontanel closes at birth or 2~3 months after birth; the anterior fontanel closes relatively later, and usually the anterior fontanel starts to close at about 1~1.5 years of age. If the fontanel closes too early, it may indicate the presence of microcephaly, which is likely to affect the intellectual development of children; if the fontanel closes too late, it may indicate the presence of rickets, hypothyroidism or hydrocephalus. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a doctor to standardize the diagnosis and treatment when necessary.
