Stem cell transplantation generally refers to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The difference between bone marrow transplantation and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is that the latter has a wider range of applications, while bone marrow transplantation is only one kind of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
1. Bone Marrow Transplantation: Bone Marrow from a healthy person is transplanted into the patient’s body, thus helping the patient to restore normal hematopoietic and immune functions. It is usually used to treat blood diseases, such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, thalassemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, and so on.
2. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: It refers to injecting autologous hematopoietic cells or normal donor peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cells into the patient’s body after the patient has been treated with systemic irradiation, chemotherapy and immunosuppression (leucovorin, fludarabine, etc.), so as to achieve the purpose of curing the disease.
Depending on the source of hematopoietic stem cells, there are currently three types of transplantation: bone marrow transplantation, umbilical cord blood stem cell transplantation and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. Therefore, bone marrow transplantation is a kind of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, while hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has a wider range of applications.
