Varicose veins in the lower limbs are one of the more common diseases among the people, commonly known as “tendon storage” in Shanghai, and in serious cases, they become “old rotten legs”, so it is necessary to treat them early. Now for the treatment of varicose veins in lower limbs, I should say that there are many methods, maybe you often see some small newspapers, small advertisements and so on the introduction of a good ointment, or a shot to remove varicose veins, etc., these are not some particularly safe methods. In modern medicine, one of the reliable treatments for varicose veins is the traditional method of vein stripping surgery, which is to take out all the veins, which can damage the surrounding blood vessels and nerves, and patients often feel uncomfortable after doing it, and even feel numbness on their feet for half a year, no feeling, etc. With the progress of science and technology and patients’ requirements for surgical safety and post-operative aesthetics, the treatment of varicose veins in lower limbs is progressing from traditional extraction surgery to minimally invasive, and varicose veins can be treated in a number of ways without stripping. Minimally invasive methods of occlusion of blood vessels by radiofrequency, ablation or laser in the venous cavity are relatively new treatment measures. This treatment is less invasive and more comfortable for the patient. The more common and mature minimally invasive means is laser occlusion, and the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Ninth People’s Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine has been treating varicose veins with lasers for more than a decade and has cured nearly 10,000 limbs. The mechanism of action of the laser is that the blood in the lumen of the vein boils through the thermal energy effect to produce evaporative bubbles, causing extensive damage to the endothelium and lining of the vessel and occluding the entire vein. This method avoids the shortcomings of traditional surgery with high trauma and slow recovery, and has the advantages of minimally invasive, short hospital stay, few complications and fast recovery. At the same time, the leg is scarless and has cosmetic effect. And the treatment target is universal, patients with varicose veins at any stage of development can receive laser treatment, but patients with a history of deep vein thrombosis are not suitable for this procedure. We generally recommend that patients come to the hospital on an empty stomach one day before the procedure to complete routine examinations and be discharged one to two days after the procedure. Of course, laser treatment also has the problem of post-operative recurrence. Our laser technology is quite mature, and the post-operative recurrence rate is controlled at less than 5%. In addition to technical reasons, the postoperative compression bandage and the subsequent wearing of a graduated compression stocking play an important role in consolidating the postoperative effect of the wider laser. We recommend that patients wear compression stockings for 2 to 3 months after surgery, and if they have to stand for a long time due to their work, it is better to wear medical compression stockings for a long time to avoid the recurrence of varicose veins in the lower limbs.
