What are the dangers of strabismus?

Strabismus affects the beauty of children and is often ridiculed and even nicknamed by onlookers, casting a shadow over young children’s minds and causing them to be withdrawn and perverse. So this is the suffering of strabismus, many children’s parents also think so, in fact, this is only the appearance of defects, but more importantly, strabismus caused the loss of monocular function of both eyes. We already know that infants are born as “very sick” children, with less than 1% of adult vision and no binocular integration. Visual function {including visual acuity and binocular monocular function} is developed by two conditions, one is the gradual development of age, within 5 years of age is an important period of visual function development; the second is to constantly accept the repeated stimulation of external clear objects to promote development. If a child has strabismus during the development of vision, the line of sight of both eyes is skewed, it is not possible to look at an object at the same time, but each eye looks at its own object, which is transmitted to the visual center of the brain to produce two different images at the same time, interfering with each other so that the eye can not see things clearly, the brain in order to overcome the “interference” of two-sided objects, can only force one In order to overcome the “interference” of two objects, the brain can only force one eye to look at something, the strabismic eye does not receive the stimulation of the object, the development of visual function stops, and the vision stops at a primary developmental stage. According to the principle of “use in and waste out”, the visual acuity of the strabismic eye not only no longer improves, but also further decreases, some visual acuity is even less than 4.0 (0.1), and even with glasses the visual acuity cannot be improved, which is medically known as strabismic amblyopia. Most children with strabismus have varying degrees of vision loss, and this is mostly seen in monocular strabismus. On the other hand, some children with strabismus go to the hospital and have a vision of 5.0 (1.0) or higher in both eyes, which can be considered normal vision, but further examination shows that monocular vision is lost in both eyes. Although such children stare at both eyes, but can only use one of them to see things, in addition to the normal child two eyes to see things open field of vision, more importantly, there is no integration ability and stereo vision, see all objects like a flat image, can not accurately distinguish the distance between the front and back of objects. Children without binocular monovision, although they can also identify the shape and size of objects, it is mainly by virtue of the shadows of objects, the degree of color clarity and blurriness, and other objects of the same size of the comparison and the experience and feeling obtained by touching similar objects, and two-eyed normal human stereo vision is essentially different. Having binocular monovision is particularly important in people’s daily life, without which we cannot adapt to our life and work everywhere. Take our three daily meals, we need to use the depth perception in stereoscopic vision to clip the meals in different positions on the table, if we try to close one eye and clip the things on the table with one eye, the accuracy of the chopsticks will not be so great. Without monocular function in both eyes, daily life and work can be troublesome, so you can imagine why having strabismus prevents you from doing highly eye-using work such as driving, surveying and mapping. It is worth noting that 2-4% of our children currently lack this function due to strabismus and amblyopia, which can greatly affect the child’s life, learning and future employment. There are also children with paralytic strabismus who, due to paralysis of the eye muscles, see things in pairs. In order to overcome this double vision, they adopt special head positions such as deviated head, crooked neck, and side face to compensate since childhood, which is medically known as compensatory head position. This condition is not only unsightly to the child, but more seriously, over time, the face grows deviated and the vertebrae grow bent, eventually leading to deformities in the skeletal development of the whole body. Strabismus in children can also cause harm that is unnoticed by the children themselves and their parents.
