What does multiple diverticula of the colon mean?

Colonic diverticula are formed when the mucosa and submucosa of the colon penetrate the muscular layer of the intestinal wall and protrude outward in a pouch, and if multiple diverticula exist, they are called multiple diverticula of the colon. Its formation may be related to the increased pressure in the intestinal cavity, such as chronic constipation, intestinal spasm, low fiber, less residue diet, etc., can make the pressure in the intestinal cavity increase. There are usually no clinical symptoms, sometimes patients only have flatulence, or abdominal discomfort, etc. Most colonic diverticula are found by chance when patients undergo colonoscopy. Asymptomatic colonic diverticula do not require special treatment, as long as attention is paid to adjusting life and dietary habits, keeping stools open and preventing constipation. If the feces and secretions within the diverticulum are not emptied properly, it will lead to diverticulitis, resulting in local pain, perforation and other symptoms, and in serious cases, it may be complicated by hemorrhage.
