The sternum is located in the middle of the anterior thorax and the glabella is the lowermost projection of the sternum. Subxiphoid pain is pain in the lower part of the glabella, also commonly referred to as pain in the mid-upper abdomen or cardiac fossa, and is usually caused by diseases of the upper abdominal organs such as the stomach, gallbladder and pancreas, but can also be caused by heart disease such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction.
