Ling Gui Jiu Gan Tang with dried ginger and epiphyllum has the effect of warming Yang and resolving fluid (warming Yang Qi in the body to promote water metabolism), strengthening the spleen and inducing dampness. Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang has the effect of warming Yang to resolve phlegm-drinking, strengthening the spleen and inducing dampness. It is indicated for treating phlegm-drink (a pathological product formed as a result of impaired metabolism of water and fluid) with deficiency of Yang in the middle Jiao. Symptoms include fullness in the chest and ribs, palpitations (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), shortness of breath and coughing, white slippery fur on the tongue, and slippery or tight pulse. Adding dried ginger and epiphyllum enhances the efficacy of warming yang. Clinically, Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang is used to treat chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, cardiogenic edema, chronic glomerulonephritis edema, Meniere’s disease, neurosis, etc., which are caused by water-drinking stagnation in the middle jiao. It is recommended that patients use Ling Gui Zhu Gan Tang strictly under the guidance of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, avoiding unauthorized addition or subtraction of medication.
