There is insufficient evidence to suggest that oral probiotics can help reduce jaundice in newborns.
For physiological jaundice, enhanced breastfeeding to promote excretion is recommended and it usually resolves on its own, in no more than 2 weeks for full-term babies and 4 weeks for premature babies.
In the case of pathological jaundice, treatment is recommended according to the doctor’s advice. If the frequency and amount of bowel movements are low, this may lead to increased circulation in the liver and intestines and poor resolution of jaundice, in which case probiotics can be used to improve bowel function and promote bowel movements.
