Does interferon cause cirrhosis?

Interferon generally does not cause cirrhosis. Interferon is a drug that can be used to treat malignant tumors such as chronic leukemia and myeloma, viral skin diseases such as warts and herpes zoster, and inflammatory skin diseases such as scleroderma; adverse reactions such as fever, pressure or erythema at the site of injection, decrease in liver function, and allergic reactions can occur after use. Cirrhosis is usually caused by viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cholestasis, drugs or chemical poisons and other factors; therefore, although interferon may cause the adverse reaction of decreased liver function, but generally does not cause cirrhosis, and if the decrease in liver function occurs after treatment with interferon usually can be recovered after stopping the drug. Patients with suspected symptoms of cirrhosis are advised to go to the hospital and ask the doctor to make a judgment and clarify the cause of the disease.
