The average life expectancy of chordoma of the skull base is about 6.3 years, and if the patient does not undergo any treatment, the average life expectancy is between about six months and two years; therefore, early medical intervention is needed for patients with chordoma of the skull base. Because the prognosis for chordoma is not too good, early treatment with aggressive and rational therapy can improve survival. Currently, surgical resection with radiation therapy is advocated for chordoma. For patients who have undergone surgery and radiation therapy, the recurrence rate can be as high as 100% within 5 years if the surgical resection is not complete. If the surgical resection is complete, the recurrence rate can still be as high as 80%. Therefore, regular follow-up of patients after chordoma surgery must be emphasized to allow early detection of recurrent lesions and early medical intervention again to improve patient survival.
