How to remove cerumen impaction

Cerumen is commonly known as earwax. The method of cerumen removal needs to be decided by an ENT doctor according to the patient’s actual condition. The most common tool used is a cerumen hook. For hard cerumen, it should be softened with 5% sodium bicarbonate solution before removal. Cerumen that is more mobile and does not completely block the external auditory canal can be removed directly with a cerumen hook. Softer cerumen can be removed in stages. Harder cerumen can be removed by first separating the cerumen from the wall of the external auditory canal with a cerumen hook, and then inserting the hook into the block of cerumen to remove it slowly. If the cerumen is dry and hard and difficult to remove, 5% sodium bicarbonate solution can be used to soften the cerumen, followed by saline rinsing of the external auditory canal, removal of the cerumen with a cerumen hook, or suction with a negative-pressure suction device. For children and other people with poor cooperation or those with deep cerumen that is difficult to remove, endoscopy is needed to assist in the cleaning process. The removal process should be gentle to avoid damage to the external auditory canal and eardrum. It is recommended to consult a doctor for standardized treatment of cerumen impaction.
