What to do about nausea after taking metformin

Patients who experience gastrointestinal reactions to Metformin, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or other discomforts, are advised to reduce the dosage or discontinue the drug. If the patient’s symptoms are tolerable, it is recommended that the patient start with a small dose of metformin, taken during or immediately after a meal, to minimize gastrointestinal reactions. If the gastrointestinal reaction is mild with a small dose, the dose of metformin can be increased gradually and slowly, depending on the blood glucose level, until the patient is able to tolerate it. Patients with significant gastrointestinal symptoms who cannot tolerate metformin should be discontinued as soon as possible.
